Drag is a sport.
As part of an activewear course I chose Drag culture as my inspiration.
The term "drag" refers to performance of masculinity, femininity or other forms of gender expression. Today’s Drag culture has developed into the mainstream but is still deeply influenced by the underground ballroom culture of the 90’s.
The multi-staged process of becoming a drag queen or king is extremely long and has to include many steps to create the perfect illusion. I chose the process itself as my main focus.
I did all I could to try and blur the line between the genders with different cuts and silhouettes, still keeping the garments wearable and suitable for activity.
The vivid colors, glitter and the wow effect is an inseparable part of the drag culture. Mixing burnt film footage I had taken in parties and nightlife scenes I created the prints myself and used them in different parts of the look. I mixed those prints with the lacing graphics that exists in both worlds.
I see drag as a sport (not just because Rupaul said so) due to the immense competitiveness alongside unique lingo that involves constant motivation boosts and encouragement, therefore made sure to include Drag terminology in the garments.
