In menswear course, we were asked to choose an icon or cultural hero to base our project on, I chose Dr.Seus the successful American author and poet.
I chose him for his wit, humor and his ability to use a simple story or poem with light rhyming to say his opinions and criticize the world around him. I focused on the term “Satire” and wanted to see what I can learn from Seuss’s work to implement in my project.
I used satire to make a parody on fashion and specifically menswear, taking familiar articles of clothing and using all tools of the satire to take it way out of proportion and make it as absurd and ridiculous as can be.
These days, the relationship between people and their clothes is far beyond a necessary body coverage. And that made me wonder, who serves who? Who wears who? do we wear our clothes or are we just a walking display hanger for social status and wealth?
I implemented in my project, different types of hangers on which not only the garment hangs, but also the wearer himself.
Lastly, I wanted to create a more ready-to-wear alternative for wearing the outfit without the hanger. In order to do that I created a system in the back of the jacket that contracts to shoulder width and 3D printed clips that hold the underwear.
Techniques used: print (sublimation), quilt, woodwork, 3D printing.
