"Out of the cage"
As part of a collaboration between Shenkar College and the Eretz Israel Museum, us students were asked to make garments inspired by artifacts from the museum’s collection.
My project was inspired by an ancient bird cage, originally from Egypt. The cage was made out of palm branches and using a traditional joinery technique.
The way the cage was built drew my attention first. The traditional woodwork, that holds itself with no nails or glue. I wanted to create the same effect with the stiff plastic parts, framing the body in an effortless and airy manner.
The dissonance that exists in the bird cage is already captured in its name, between freedom and captivation. I used contrasting materials to embody that tension in the garment.
I was deeply inspired by the traditional woodwork so I chose to make the skirt by hand and used the historical craft that was used to make the Elizabethan ruff in its era.
The end result is a garment that blends the border of the sky and the earth. Creating a feeling of float and lightness within the borders surrounding it.
